Pakistan houses some of the world’s largest salt deposits and is the second largest salt mine in the world located within its borders in Khewra. The country’s salt reserves are estimated to be around 10 billion tons and each year, 40,000 tons of this salt is exported. The pink Himalayan salt doesn’t come from the Himalayas but is mined from the salt that was deposited in the Khewra salt mines, 180 kilometers from Islamabad, in Punjab province, around 800 million years ago.

Earlier in 2019, a legislation was passed to trademark the unique pink salt as a Pakistani product after a social media outrage that called for an end to selling the raw salt at cheap rates to India. Once Khewra is registered with international trade bodies, it will prevent Indian traders to market the Pakistani rock salt as Himalayan Pink Salt. The Cabinet designated the Pakistan Minerals Development Corporation (PMDC), as the registrant agency to finalize requirements for registration of the rock salt with the Geographical Indications (GI) registry, under the management and control of Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPO-Pakistan).
Pakistan enacted Geographical Indications Act 2020 last year to combat counterfeiting and to ensure premium prices for the country’s native product. Currently, there is a very high global demand for rock salt in Korea and Thailand to be used in massage centers because of its healing properties.
